“The Artist’s Salon: A Short Documentary on John Hatlestad”
“Working with wood over the past 30 years has been an extraordinary experience. There is a level of satisfaction which one brushes shoulders with, that I suspect is shared by the farmer… I am fascinated by the rich veins of texture and design that can be salvaged from discarded farm machinery. The juxtaposition of pitted metal and wood always brings a satisfying visual experience.”
For more work by John Hatlestad, visit his website or come visit Hesperidian Art Gallery in Wicker Park. Hatlestad is also featured in Hesperidian’s second Artist’s Salon film, “Three Master Artists.” The music in this video was provided by Professor Kliq.

The main thing is to have the money. I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. *Believe* me, rich is better.

Images from “Dreams & Myths: Mosaic Sculptures and Assemblages by Chicago Artist Joan Zgoda.”
… Joan Zgoda’s art communicates a mysterious and compassionate sensibility towards the natural world, seen and unseen. Inspired by dreams or song — or the whimsy inherent in even the most serious subjects — the otherworldly quality of Joan Zgoda’s work speaks powerfully of death, decay, life and rebirth. Found objects, including the bones of animals, provide a base for many pieces and transmit an appreciation for the life force in all things and its transmuting power.
